During college, Marty Russell had the dubious reputation of being labeled 'the raving agnostic' by her friends until she came to Christ in 1971. As a non Christian, her probing questions about the Bible was the reason she sought out more biblical training soon after college. Marty was one of the first women to ever attend Dallas Theological Seminary where she earned a Masters of Arts degree in Biblical Studies. She was a pastor's wife for 9 years and served as Assistant Director of Women's Ministries at First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton for 6 years.
For the last 10 years Marty has been an adjunct professor at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University teaching both graduate and undergrad courses to women. In 2003 she taught a weekly Bible study attended by 300 women. Marty also serves on the Network of Evangelical Women in Ministry board and speaks at retreats and women's conferences. Her speaking and writing blends a robust intellectual understanding of the faith that engages both mind and heart as she challenges women to go deeper with Christ and live their lives with spiritual intentionality. Several articles written by Marty have recently been published online at Crosswalk.com and Christianity.com.
Her husband Walt is a full professor in the Biblical Exposition dept. at Talbot. They have been married 35 years and have two grown children. Marty is especially proud that she has recently added mother-in-law and 'Mother of a Rock Star' to her resume!
Her daughter, Elizabeth, after finishing her MA in Art History, is now an adjunct teacher at the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing in Los Angeles. She and her husband Justin reside in Los Angeles. Marty’s son, Jonathan, is a member of the band Cold War Kids which began in 2003. They have released two CD’s and have toured extensively in the US, the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan and frequently appear live on many late night talk shows in the US. As Christian artists, they are committed to presenting the plight of broken humanity in a compassionate way that expresses God’s tender heart toward the world.
Like most women she has worn many hats as wife, mother, teacher, radio producer, writer/speaker and now real estate agent. In every season of life God uses the many talents and gifts a woman has to reflect God’s love, care and nurture and to advance the Kingdom in very creative ways.
